Joe St.Johanser – Baritone

A versatile singing actor with a wide range of styles – Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Offenbach – powerful, mellow baritone with good diction. A convincing comedian, straight man or tragedian.

Joe has had a long career as a software engineer (B.Sc.(Econ.) Hons., University College London, M.Sc. (Computer Science, University of London), starting his singing studies in 1984 (B.Mus. Hons. Surrey University), full member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians since 2004. He currently studies with Wynford Evans. He is also a composer of songs, opera and oratorio (‘Spem’ 2002, ‘The Year of the Green Parrots’ 2003, ‘Ode to Galileo’ 2004 - available from Robosoft Music ), a translator of opera libretti (‘Cosi fan Tutte’, 2003) and an opera director ('Cosi fan Tutte' for Starlight Opera at the Barn Theatre Oxted 2003)

Agamemnon in 'La Belle Helene' (Offenbach) with Guildford Opera Company at the Electric Theatre Guildford.

Nabucco in 'Nabucco' (Verdi) with Canford Opera Course at the Layard Theatre. Fully costumed version of about half the opera with full orchestra, with Peter Clarke and Richard Gregson.

Sir Roderic Murgatroyd in "Ruddigore" (Gilbert and Sullivan) with Bookham Operatic at Fetcham, Surrey.

Timur in "Turandot" (Puccini) with Canford Opera Course at the Layard Theatre. Fully costumed version of about half the opera with full orchestra, with Peter Clarke and Richard Gregson.

Swallow in "Peter Grimes" (Britten) at the Point Theatre, Eastleigh. A workshop performance of about half the opera, with Nina Walker and Richard Gregson.

Ping in "Turandot" (Puccini) with NODA Opera Summer School of Music at Ripon, Yorkshire. A fully costumed version of much of Act 2 and Act 3, with small orchestra, with Percy Lovell and Anne Ballantyne.

Petruchio/Fred Graham in "Kiss Me Kate" (Cole Porter) with Barn Operatic at the Adrian Mann Theatre, Leatherhead.

Oliver Hix in "The Music Man" (Willson) with Woking Operatic at the Rhoda Mcgaw Theatre, Woking.

Escamillo in "Carmen" (Bizet) with Barn Operatic at the Epsom Playhouse.

Corydon in "The Fairie Queene" (Purcell) with Charterhouse Summer School of Music. Semi-staged with full orchestra with Ian Humphris.

Sid Sorokin in "The Pyjama Game" (Adler) with Banstead and Nork Operatic Society at the Epsom Playhouse.

W.S.Gilbert in "The Savoyards" (Sullivan) with Guildford Opera at the Ben Travers Theatre, Charterhouse.

Baron Gondremarck in "La Vie Parisienne" (Offenbach) with Banstead and Nork Operatic Society at the Epsom Playhouse. "Words and Music" said " I was impressed with Joe St. Johanser as the Baron, showing good stage presence".

Jimmy in "Last Tango in Whitby" (Mike Harding) with Barn Theatre Club in Molesey.

Germont Pere in "La Traviata" (Verdi) with Canford Summer School of Music at Canford, Dorset. A fully costumed version of Act 2 only, with full orchestra, with Peter Clarke and Jonathan Clift.

Papageno in "The Magic Flute" (Mozart) - semi-staged extracts with full orchestra at Canford Summer School of Music.

Guiseppe in "The Gondoliers" (Sullivan) with Barn Operatic at the Barn Hall, Bookham. The Leatherhead Advertiser "Joe has a natural stage presence".

Guglielmo in "Cosi fan Tutte" (Mozart) - semi-staged extracts with full orchestra at Canford Summer School of Music.

Don Giovanni in "Don Giovanni" (Mozart) - semi-staged extracts with full orchestra at Canford Summer School of Music, with Robert Hayward.

Jack Point in "Yeomen of the Guard" (Sullivan) with Woking Operatic at the Queen Elizabeth II Theatre, Woking. The Woking Review said " Joe St. Johanser played Jack Point, the fool, and here was star quality, with swiftly spoken Shakespearean-style foolery, the delicate dancing and the final poignant moment when he doesn’t get the girl - a performance to be remembered".
